Safety Tips
Tips to prepare for potential weather events and to stay safe in a storm:
Tip #1
Check
MetService
or
Weatherwatch
for weather updates.
Tip #2
During a weather event, people using medical equipment that relies on electricity should make sure they’re prepared for power disruptions and enact their backup plan when required.
If you have a health concern, contact your health provider – in an emergency contact 111. We recommend that your register your medically dependent status with your electricity retailer.
Tip #3
Keep a torch and spare batteries handy and ensure that you have at least one telephone that does not rely on electricity for operation.
Tip #4
Ensure that an alternate fuel is always available for cooking (e.g. gas for BBQ).
Tip #5
Ensure you have a supply of food and provisions in case you find your property isolated.
Tip #6
If it’s safe to do so, check your gutters and drains, secure large outdoor items and move any loose outdoor equipment or furniture inside.
Tip #7
Stay well clear of fallen power lines or damaged electrical equipment and treat them as live at all times.
Tip #8
In a power outage make sure elements on your stove, gas hobs, the kettle, and all heaters are turned off. This ensures they don't come back on without you noticing when the power supply returns.
Tip #9
Stay well clear of damaged or weakened trees.
Tip #10
Don't touch or use any electrical appliances while barefoot in damp or wet conditions.
Tip #11
Avoid possible damage to electrical appliances (in the unlikely event there is a power surge when the power is restored) by switching off appliances at the wall.
Tip #12
If you're using a generator, make sure you place it outside and follow the manufacturers' guidelines.
Tip #13
Check on your neighbours to see if they need any assistance
