Just in time for the Christmas holidays – EV (electric vehicle) drivers can now find public charging stations across New Zealand on Vector’s updated EV charging App.

The location of EV chargers throughout the country is now available on the popular EV charging App with directions and charger information. Vector Chief Executive Simon Mackenzie says there are currently 126 charging locations on the App, from Kawakawa to Invercargill.

“Our Auckland-based App has really taken off since its launch in September. As more EV chargers pop up around the country there’s a real appetite to get all their details in one accessible place. So we’ve invited other EV charging operators on-board to make it happen,” says Mr Mackenzie.

“New Zealand’s network of EV chargers is growing but is still sparse in many parts, especially when compared with petrol stations. This will give drivers peace of mind on long journeys, allowing them to plan essential charging stops.

“EV registrations are steadily rising with more choice in new and used imports as well as Telsa setting up shop here next year. We’ll be installing more chargers in Auckland and the trend will no doubt continue throughout the country.”

The App currently shows the live status of Vector’s rapid chargers and the company is working with others to include the live status of their rapid chargers, including those on the ChargeNet NZ network. ChargeNet NZ currently have thirty 50 kW rapid chargers nationwide.

• Depending on the vehicle, rapid chargers can replenish 80 per cent of a 32Kw battery in 20 minutes. 
• As at 18 November 2016 Vector’s networks have:
  • had 9,095 rapid charging sessions in total
  • an average 20 minutes’ charge time
  • delivered 59.28 MWh of electricity which would allow a Nissan Leaf to drive 342,705km saving 78,803 kilograms of CO2 emissions.
• Up until the end of November there were 2,250 light EVs registered in New Zealand, largely concentrated in Auckland.
• The Government has an extensive programme to support the uptake of EVs in New Zealand including: supporting EV charging networks; exemptions from road user charges; contestable funds; and EV use of special vehicle lanes.
