Lightning strikes across Auckland this morning

Media Releases
Lightning strikes have caused power outages in some rural areas of Auckland this morning.

Metservice is showing more than 860 strikes across Auckland this morning as a consequence of today’s thunder storm that is passing across the city.

High levels of energy injected into Vector’s network by some of the lightning strikes have caused the network to trip in some northern, western and eastern suburbs, including Whangaparoa, Piha, Laingholm, Oratia, and Helensville, Maraetai, Clevedon.

Vector’s network managers are back-feeding electricity to those affected areas from nearby powerlines and other infrastructure, and power is being continuously restored to these areas where possible.

However, in some areas, some customers may remain without power until it is safe for Vector’s outage crews to repair the faults in the storm.

During a power outage, please remember that the safety of the public and Vector’s contracting field staff is of primary importance at all times.

And most importantly, please, always treat downed lines as live and stay well clear
