Swanson Street project
Upgrading electricity cables under Swanson Street
Vector is upgrading electricity cables under Swanson Street to improve the safety and reliability of the network and to support future growth in the city. The project will be delivered in stages from October 2025 through early 2026.
Swanson Street project FAQS
We’re replacing aging electricity cables in the tunnel under Swanson Street to improve the safety and reliability of your power supply. By completing this work now, we also ensure the network can keep pace with growth and development in the city.
The first stage starts in early October 2025 and runs for around three weeks. The project will then progress in stages through early 2026. Some stages are still to be confirmed (TBC). We’ll provide updates as the schedule is finalised.
Vector is managing the project. Civil construction will be delivered by Stockman General Contractors Ltd, and cabling by Northpower.
The work includes excavation in the roadway and footpath to access and replace underground cables. Barriers and fencing will be in place for safety, with noise mats used where possible to help reduce noise.
We’re coordinating with Auckland Transport’s bus lane improvements, scheduled for completion by the end of November 2025. Doing the work at the same time avoids having to return later, reducing disruption overall.
Slot trenching will take place over two weekends (27–28 September and 4–5 October) to confirm the location of underground services. This is an important step to plan the main project safely. It will involve some noise from saw cutting and vacuum trucks but is short-term and limited to those weekends.
There will be temporary parking changes, traffic cones, and lane adjustments along Swanson Street and nearby roads. Staging the project helps keep traffic moving while still allowing access. A separate letter from our traffic management contractor, Parallaxx, will outline changes to specific spaces (such as mobility, loading, or car share).
Full road closures are not planned. However, sections of the street may be restricted during excavation. Stop/Go controls and lane shifts may be required at times. Access will be maintained wherever possible.
Some planned outages are required to safely complete this work. Customers affected will receive separate notifications with advance notice of dates, times, and duration.
Most work will happen between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Friday, with some weekend work. Occasionally, critical tasks may extend to 10pm. If this happens, we’ll notify affected residents and businesses in advance.
Yes. Some footpaths may be temporarily closed, but pedestrian management will be in place to guide safe access. Driveways will be managed to maintain access as much as possible.
You may hear construction noise, particularly during excavation and trenching. Noise mats will be used where practical. Work hours have been set to minimise disruption, but some evening work may be required.
Our traffic management team will work to maintain access for delivery and service vehicles, though some minor delays may occur. Rubbish and recycling collection will continue, with adjustments communicated in advance. Ride-share pickups may be temporarily relocated depending on the stage of work.
Yes. We’ve coordinated with emergency services to ensure they can always access Swanson Street during the project.
Any affected roads, footpaths, and street features will be reinstated to their original condition. Where temporary materials are used, these will be replaced with permanent finishes that match the streetscape.
