Cyclone Vaianu: Media statement 12 April 11 am
13 April 2026
Auckland has come through last night’s heavy rain with minimal disruption to the power network, after concerns about the potential for widespread outages from Cyclone Vaianu. Vector will continue to monitor the situation, with stronger winds forecast this afternoon.
As of 9am, 115 homes and businesses were without power. We expect this number will change throughout the day as conditions evolve.
While the overall impact has been limited, those without power include people in Swanson, where a large tree fell onto a power line overnight. Arborists are currently working to safely remove the tree, before Vector crews can repair the damaged pole and lines and get the power back on. We understand the frustration outages cause and our crews we’ll continue to work as quickly as they safely can to help affected homes and businesses.
As a safety reminder, people should stay well clear of any fallen or low‑hanging power lines and always assume they are live. Anyone who sees a downed line or something that looks unsafe should call 111 immediately.
