Wellesley St Bridge network reinforcement project

Wellesley St Bridge network reinforcement project was completed on 14 Jun 2010
Start Date:
21 Apr 2010
Completion Date:
14 Jun 2010

Project File

We are carrying out work at the Wellesley Street over-bridge to reinforce the electricity network.

Project timing: 21 April - 14 June, weather permitting.

What work is being carried out
In January we installed cable ducts under the Wellesley St over bridge. We are now installing cables in those ducts.

How the work is being carried out
The cables will be installed from a single trench in Symonds St adjacent to the traffic island to the south of the bridge, and will require the lane to be closed immediately around the worksite for the duration of the project

Hours of work: Our crews will be working between 7am and 10pm, 7 days a week, to finish the project quickly.

We are mindful that people live in the area and we will be making every effort to minimise disruption, especially noise. Our work hours are inline with Council permitted work hours for the area.

Access to car parking and buildings
The work should not affect access to any driveways.  The worksite is confined to a single trench in Symonds St adjacent to the traffic island to the south of the bridge.

Minimising disruption
There will be some noise which is unavoidable. We understand that people live in the area and we will be making every effort to minimise all disruptions, especially noise.

The power supply
The power supply should not be affected in any way.

Traffic management and reinstatement
The traffic flow should not be too adversely affected by the work – the bus lane will only need to be closed immediately around our worksite. We have one other worksite located further up Symonds St.

Full traffic management plans have been developed and will be used throughout the duration of the project. We are liaising closely with the bus companies. Pedestrians will still be able to pass by the work site.

Thank you for your patience
We’d like to thank residents and businesses, in advance, for their patience and cooperation while work is underway. We will be making every effort to minimise disruption and complete the work as quickly as possible. The work is necessary to reinforce the security of power supply in the city.

Hi David Thank you for your

Hi David

Thank you for your feedback. We regret that this work was not coordinated with recent Symonds Street road works and the inconvenience this has caused to commuters.

We do try to coordinate our works to minimise disruption. In this case, because we were not originally intending to install the cables for another few years, the council work was well in advance of our timetable.

However, we reviewed our strategy and brought the works forward. We carefully considered and investigated all alternatives as we are mindful of the impact road works have and that council works on Symond’s Street had only recently been reinstated. The cable for the project was ordered at this time.

We have worked closely with Council to identify periods of least disruption to carry out works, and the decision was made to carry out the most disruptive works – the open trenching in the road to install the ducts - over the holiday period.

This timing unfortunately did not coincide with the cable delivery but as the ducting would be most disruptive to traffic we bought this portion of the work forward. We are now able to install the entire length of cables in the ducts from only a few small trenches.

Our final reinstatement work will be to the highest standard and under council supervision.

We hope this answers your query. Please let us know if you would like any further information on the project and its timeframe.

Re Wellesley St bridge road

Re Wellesley St bridge road works on Symonds St.

Vector states that cable ducts were installed in January and now it is installing cables in those ducts. This may well seem a dumb question but I am sure the travelling public of Auckland would like to know why on earth the cables could not have been installed when the road was dug up in January?

Considering the months of traffic disruption in Symonds St that motorists had to put up with whilst the Central Connector bus corridor was being built it is unbelievable that in the space of three months Vector has now dug up the new road surface twice.

Surely Vector could have installed these cable ducts and cables whilst the Connector was being built thus preserving the new pristine road surface. Vector's legacy from this shambolic exercise apart from yet more needless traffic disruption will be the large sink holes left in the road surface as testament to the total inefficiency in managing the company's projects.

David Mannion
