Project File

Vector is undertaking a cable replacement project to reinforce the power supply in Richmond road area to ensure our customers continue to receive a secure power supply.

Streets affected by this work include: Richmond Road, Parawai Crescent, Sackville Street, Lincoln Street, Cockburn Street, Farrar Street, Chamberlain Street, Norfolk Street, Rose Road, Millais Street, Surrey Crescent.

Project timing: March – September 2010

The project work will be carried out in sections throughout the area and should only directly affect the road frontage outside each property for a small amount of this time.

Hours of work: Our hours of work will be normal working hours - Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5:30pm

Project details:
The new underground cables will be installed in the grass verge in your street. We will be using underground drilling to avoid disturbing any footpaths recently refurbished by Auckland City Council as much as possible. In some places however, we may need to dig small trenches which could affect the footpath. The reinstatement of our work areas, in the footpath and grass verge, will be carried out to the highest standard, under council supervision. In some streets we are coordinating our work with the Councils footpath renewal work.

To ensure a smooth flow of traffic, full traffic management plans have been developed and will be used throughout the duration of the project. In most cases, the directional flow of both traffic lanes will be maintained. The work sites have been designed so that pedestrians will still be able to pass by the works.

The power supply in the area should not be affected by work. In the unlikely event that a planned power outage is required, affected customers will be notified in advance of this occurring.

We apologise, in advance, for any inconvenience this project may cause and thank you for your patience and cooperation while the work is underway.

The underground cables we are

The underground cables we are upgrading were installed long before our undergrounding programme was established. The cables are high voltage and distribute power between substations and other strategic equipment.

Our planned undergrounding work schedule is reviewed every year and Richmond Rd, as with all areas in Trust region, will be considered for future undergrounding. The presence of high voltage cable already underground and the low voltage lines remaining overhead is common and will not affect any decision making around whether the area qualifies for undergrounding. Unfortunately we cannot underground all areas where we or other parties are carrying out work.

For more information about our undergrounding selection criteria see http://www.vector.co.nz/projects/undergrounding

Are the overhead wires in Richmond road being undegrounded?
If not why not do this while putting in new power cable?
