Project File
Vector and Auckland Transport are working together to undertake essential infrastructure work on Quay Street.
The purpose of this project is to future-proof the electrical and telecommunications infrastructure in the lower part of the CBD, including the ports and Britomart. This work will involve completing the second and final stage of the CBD electricity network reinforcement, ensuring customers continue to receive a safe and reliable power supply, and rebuilding a significant section of the road. The extent of the work will be from Tangihua Street to Lower Hobson Street.
Project timing: 27 December 2010 – April 2011
Hours of work
The majority of work will take place in sections between 7am to 7pm, seven days a week. However, some work towards the end of the project will be required to take place outside of these hours. The project schedule allows for the fastest possible completion and minimum level of disruption under noise and safety restrictions for the type of work that is taking place.
What work is being carried out?
We will be filling and decommissioning the service tunnel under Quay Street as it has reached the ends of its operational life. We are also installing new ducts to provide electricity and telecommunications infrastructure for future growth. Auckland Transport will carry out the resurfacing of the road pavement.
This project will provide long-term benefits to the CBD and includes components of infrastructure maintenance and development necessary to ensure the city is ready for Rugby World Cup 2011.
How will the work be carried out?
The works will be undertaken by excavations, in two parts. One is localised excavations to install the material required to fill the tunnel and the other is a continual trench to install the ducts.
Closely following our works, Auckland Transport will undertake the rebuilding and reinstatement of the road. Other service providers will also be utilising the time to complete maintenance works to ensure all works are completed under the same programme.
Will the power supply be affected?
No. The overall project should not disrupt the power supply in the area.
Streets affected by the works
Quay Street and all side streets leading onto Quay Street: Hobson Street, Albert Street, Commerce Street, Gore Street, Britomart Place, Tangihua Place, Tinley Street, Queen Street (buses only)
Traffic and pedestrian management
Full traffic management plans have been developed and will be used throughout the project work.
Quay Street will not be blocked throughout the works; however, due to the extent of the works, Quay Street will be reduced to three lanes; one lane of traffic each way and a dedicated bus lane. Measures are being put in place to communicate the lane closures to motorists so that traffic congestion is minimised. We urge motorist to avoid using Quay Street at this time.
Pedestrians will still have full use of the footpath and be able to pass by the works in most cases. In some number of instances, pedestrians may be asked to use the other side of the road. Pedestrians can still access the harbour and ferry services.
A dedicated project ambassador will be in touch with businesses and residents along the project route to communicate project updates and answer any questions people may have around the project as it progresses.
Every effort will be made to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. We apologise for any inconvenience this project may cause and thank you for your patience and cooperation while this work is underway.
