Project File
The Auckland Energy Consumer Trust (AECT) and Vector are undertaking a major undergrounding project in Manurewa that will see the overhead electricity and phone lines across part of Manurewa disappear. New streetlights will also be installed and, where necessary, the footpaths will be upgraded.
Vector is also future proofing the area and will be laying ducting for fibre optic cables in each street. The ducts will be installed right up to the homes in the project area where the overhead service lines are being undergrounded.
This project is part of the AECT and Vector's long term plan to put the remaining overhead power lines underground in the urban areas of Auckland, Manukau and Papakura.
A unique feature of this project is Vector's 'dig once' approach, which involves getting together with Chorus (Telecom’s network business) and Manukau City Council to coordinate works at the same time. With their help 16 Manurewa streets will benefit from the project.
Project timing: October 2009 – December 2010
To minimise disruption to residents work will be carried out in sections within the project block and should only directly affect any one property for a short amounts of this time.
Customer’s to benefit from the project: approximately 1200 homes and businesses
Work details: All customer power and phone lines within the area of works and in the road reserve will be replaced by underground cables. New street lighting will be installed and in some areas, new footpaths will also be installed.
Streets to benefit from the project:Marr Road, Jellicoe Road, Beatty Avenue, Northcrest Way, Corrin Avenue, Maich Road, Ruth Street, Lomas Place, Halsey Street, Clark Street, Martin Road, Adams Road, Lyndon Place, Sturdee Road, Gibbs Road, and part of Browns Road (see project map).
Project details: It is expected that ground conditions will allow trenchless techniques to be used for installation of ducts and cables. Some small excavations will still be required, however these will be kept to a minimum to avoid disruption to pedestrian traffic.
Excavations will mostly be in the footpath and grass berm area. Some of our work may require a brief power shutdown, but we will notify affected customers in advance of this occurring.
Full traffic and pedestrian management plans are in place to minimise disruption. The worksites have been designed so that pedestrians will still be able to pass by the works.
We have notified the local schools and are liaising with the walking school bus.
We apologise for any inconvenience this project may cause and thank you for your patience and cooperation while the work is underway.

With view to your one dig
With view to your one dig policy, Chorus have been carrying out improvements on Bleakhouse Road in Mellons Bay, this would have been an ideal opportunity to install underground cabling and remove the unsightly telegraph posts, which have a detrimental effect on the stunning views to Rangitoto and the other Hauraki Gulf Islands and beyond. Please advise if and when this area is scheduled for this much needed work.
Mellons Bay is not on our
Mellons Bay is not on our planned work schedule in the next 18 months unfortunately. But as with all areas in the Trust region your area will be reviewed for undergrounding every year.
Unfortunately we cannot underground all streets where other parties are carrying out work and areas we select for priority undergrounding are assessed against a number of other criteria too - including the age and condition of the lines and equipment, the fault history and the number of customers who will benefit. One to two areas are selected every year based on all of these criteria.

Hi there Our planning horizon
Hi there
Our planning horizon for our undergrounding programme is about 18 months. We regularly review the areas selected to make sure they are aligned with our undergrounding priorities (http://www.vector.co.nz/projects/undergrounding). At the moment a number of areas are prioritised ahead of work in St Heliers and we don't have any undergrounding scheduled in the area within our current planning horizon (18 months). But, as with all areas in the Trust area this is reviewed regularly.
