Vector sacrifices power pole to drive home safety message (21/09/09)

Vector will be filming a controlled car versus power pole scenario in Hobsonville over the next two days which will be used as an educational tool at its upcoming staff Safety Day.

‘This scenario has been designed to put our people’s knowledge to the test and will require a cooperative approach across our networks’ says Vector Group Chief Executive Officer Simon Mackenzie.

‘Our people face serious danger everyday, so it is essential that we provide them with the right tools and training to ensure they go home safely.’

Mr Mackenzie says that cars hitting poles is one of the most common events that affects Vector’s network.

A critical part of Vector’s safety policy is its employee’s ability to ensure incident sites like this are made safe for the public as well.

Mr Mackenzie says that Vector’s commitment to safety is unshakeable and its safety policy requires all employees and contractors to create and maintain a safe and injury-free work environment, for themselves and the public.

‘We strive to nurture a culture where everyone is accountable for safety and our safety days are an ideal forum to reinforce this message.’

The scenario will be filmed on 21 and 22 September in Hobsonville. The local volunteer fire service is lending a hand and will be on site to supervise some of the filming.

Vector’s safety day in Auckland will be held on 10 November and then taken around the country to all Vector employees and contractors. Safety Day is compulsory for all Vector employees and its contractors.
