Twenty six Sandringham streets have been completely transformed by the recently completed undergrounding project.
“The project has improved the skyline across a 9.6 kilometre area following the removal of all of the overhead lines” says Vector Group Chief Executive Officer Simon Mackenzie.
The project is as a result of the Auckland Energy Consumer Trust’s (AECT) deed with Vector to spend at least $12.5 million every year on undergrounding projects on its Auckland, Manukau and Papakura lines network.
“The large block project is the seventh completed since the programme began in 2002” says Mr Mackenzie.
An important part of the undergrounding programme is Vector's 'dig once' approach, which involves getting together with other utilities to coordinate works at the same time.
Mr Mackenzie says that because the work can be disruptive Vector works whenever it can with the local council and other utilities to coordinate work and share resources.
“The project has seen the area undergo a complete transformation thanks to the shared vision of project partners and local authorities. The residents are now supplied by state-of-the-art infrastructure that will last for decades to come while catering for future demand in the area” Mr Mackenzie says.
A testament to the success of Vector’s ‘dig once’ approach is the fact that project has finished nearly three months ahead of schedule.
“We really appreciate the patience and cooperation of the residents while the work was underway and hope they are pleased with the improvements we’ve made.”
All overhead lines within the area of works have been replaced by underground cables and new street lighting has been installed. Parts of the water network and some footpaths have also been upgraded.
