Safety first

Our natural gas distribution network supplies more than 30 towns and cities across the North Island.

Vector regularly inspects all of our pipelines to check for possible leaks or other signs of damage. However, as an additional safety precaution, Vector adds a highly distinctive sulphur-like odour to natural gas. We add this odour at such a high concentration so that even when there are extremely low levels of gas flowing through the system and little risk present, it can still be detected.

Gas can be dangerous, so we have listed some important safety information for you to follow if you are concerned that there could be a gas leak in the home or outdoors. The most important thing to remember is that if you are concerned about a gas smell then call our emergency number 0800 764 764 or the fire service on 111 immediately.

If you suspect a gas leak indoors

What to do

  • Call the fire service on 111 if you are concerned
  • Open the doors and windows to ventilate the area
  • Get out of the house or building
  • Turn the gas meter off, if you know where the gas meter is.

Instructions for Turning off Gas Meter

Your gas meter is located outside the house. The valve on the service pipe only requires a quarter turn to move from ‘on’ to ‘off’. The gas supply is off/closed when it is horizontal to the pipe

If your meter valve does not have a handle, use a wrench or a spanner. Give the valve 1/4 turn clockwise (i.e. 12 - 3 o'clock) to turn the valve off.

What not to do

  • Do not operate cellphones, light matches or expose naked flames
  • Do not operate electrical equipment or switches, as a flick of a switch could cause a spark and ignite the gas

If you suspect a gas leak outdoors

What to do

  • Call the fire service on 111 if you are concerned
  • Move yourself and everyone else well away from the leak or incident
  • Do not operate cellphones, light matches or expose naked flames

What not to do

  • Do not operate electrical equipment or switches, as a flick of a switch could cause a spark and ignite the gas
  • Do not operate machinery or vehicles
  • Do not try to cover the damaged pipe with any material, including digger buckets.
