Our responsibilities

Electricity network companies, like Vector, are required by the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 to ensure trees do not grow too close to their lines. As a network owner, we are responsible for:

  • Inspecting our network to identify trees inside the growth limit or notice zones. These zones specify the distance around electricity network lines which must be kept clear of trees, shrubs and vegetation.
  • Providing the first cut or trim free of charge for trees inside the growth limit zone (unless the tree is covered by a previous arrangement or is part of a horticultural shelterbelt).
  • Notifying tree owners with a cut or trim notice when a tree is growing inside the growth limit zone.
  • Ensuring tree owners comply with cut or trim notices and the regulations.
Our tree trimming programme
We have contracted Treescape and other professional arborists to check our lines, notify tree owners and carry out work as required by the regulations. We are committed to providing tree owners with full information before carrying out the first free cut or trim, or carrying out any work on trees on private property. Our liaison officers will try to speak directly with the residents. Where no one is available, written information will be sent. Because we do not have a database of property owners, tenants will be asked to forward the information to the property owner.

Our tree trimming policy
While every care will be taken with the appearance of the trimmed trees, the first priority must be to meet the regulations. When trimming trees near electricity lines, the priorities are to provide safe clearance from the lines and equipment, and to ensure the tree remains healthy. In order to correctly trim the tree and protect its health, it may be necessary to make a pruning cut beyond the notice zone - for instance at the main trunk or stem.

The pruning techniques used on our network follow best practice for utility arboriculture. We sometimes use a technique which encourages the growth of the tree to extend away from the lines. The health of the tree is not compromised and the tree still has a good canopy. Please be aware that the visual effect of this trimming can be dramatic directly after pruning.

Using professional arborists ensures the tree recovers swiftly. Within six months the tree will be showing re-growth and the prune points will be less obvious. Your patience and understanding is appreciated while the work is being done and while the trees adjust after trimming.
