Distributed generation

Distributed generation means equipment used for generating electricity which is connected to a distribution network (i.e. Vector’s electricity network) and is also capable of injecting electricity back into that distribution network. Examples of this could include: solar, photovoltaic, wind, gas and biomass.

Vector’s policies and procedures for the application for, installation and connection of distributed generation are in accordance with the requirements of the Electricity Governance (Connection of Distributed Generation) Regulations 2007.

Please read through the relevant documents below, and call Vector on (09) 303 0626 or email dginfo@vector.co.nz if you wish to discuss your situation further.

Distributed generation with capacity of 10 kilowatts or less (≤10kW)
The following information applies to customers who generate their own electricity on-site via a small scale generator (10 kilowatts or less) which is, or can be, connected to Vector’s electricity network.

Step 1. Read the following documentation thoroughly
Step 2. Notify Vector of your connection using the following form
Step 3. Vector will contact you to confirm receipt of your connection notification and, if correctly completed, grant final approval.

Step 4.  Connect your distributed generation system to Vector’s network

Distributed generation with capacity of greater than 10 kilowatts (>10kW)
The following information applies to customers who generate their own electricity on-site via a small scale generator (greater than 10 kilowatts) which is, or can be, connected to Vector’s electricity network.

Step 1. Read the following documentation thoroughly
Step 2. Apply to Vector and send initial application payment fee
Step 3. Vector will contact you to acknowledge your application and to discuss any further information or design work that will be required

Step 4. Submit your final application for connection to Vector
Step 5. Once your final application is approved, you will need to send Vector your notice to proceed in writing.

Step 6. Vector will contact you to negotiate a connection agreement. If an agreement cannot be reached you will be connected on the regulated terms. Once the terms and conditions of connection are agreed, we will give approval for you to connect.

Step 7. Connect your distributed generation system.
